The Tree of Truth
By Wayne Austin
The Tree of Truth Each of us is born into this world with the Seed of Truth implanted in our Heart. As we grow, we become conditioned by the society in which we live and by the genetic memories we inherit. This conditioning is supported and nurtured by the world, and it becomes so loud that at some point we can no longer Hear Truth. We become fixated on making a living, our place in the herd, how we look to others. All of these outside reference points that we use to gauge how well we're doing vis-a-vis everyone else, give birth to doubts and fears. Maybe we're not doing as well as we “should.” We begin to doubt that we're as smart as others or that we'll be able to meet the expectations of others, or that we're attractive enough. All of these standards are based upon the prevailing standards, which have all been created by and believed in by the mind.
At some point, a rare few begin to look askance, to question the whole structure of life as they know it. They begin to question whether the effort required to maintain the facade of life is worth the effort. They look at the suffering all around them which is visible, if one does not deny it. They look at the history of humankind and see the same story being told again and again. They see humankind continuing to follow the same trance-like patterns that it has always followed, and they pause. For most, the pause is only temporary because they don’t see any other way to live in the world, except to redouble their efforts and try harder.
Some may attempt to follow a religious/spiritual path and this may bring a certain temporary soothing feeling, but when crisis arises all of the religious teachings in the world do not mitigate the suffering that ensues. Religion has been around since the dawn of humankind and it has not made any difference in the suffering, it has only put a bandage on it.
It is rarer still to find those who have seen through the façade of religion and knowing no other thing to do, pause again.
For some of these rare beings, when they reach the "end of their rope" they cry out, "Oh God!”, and Realization begins. The cry need not be to a deity, it may just be a Silent “stopping," but they have recognized that the mind and all of its creations has taken them as far as it can. They may have found riches, fame, fortune. They may be celebrated and loved, yet in their quiet moments, just before the light goes out at night, they ask, “Is this all there is?”
The answer to that question is: yes, in the domain of the illusional world, this is all there is. The world can only offer temporary bandages to cover the wound of separation, separation from the Self. Many people spend their lives applying bandages to the wound, thinking this is the best life has to offer.
But those rare few who will settle for nothing less than Truth stop applying the bandages and face the pain the mind has created. They finally surrender to the inevitable death of the personality, the ego, and with this death comes rebirth. This rebirth is the birth of the Realization of Truth.
It is truly a birth as it is like nothing that has gone before. It is a recognition that Peace, God, has always been Here, Present.
This is not another mind created meaningless concept such as “salvation.” It is real, but not real in the sense that the mind holds real. The mind holds reality to be what the mind can see. The Reality we speak of is not knowable by the mind, hence it is not seen. It cannot be seen or known by the mind. Once this Truth is accepted, not accepted because it makes sense, but accepted on Trust, and not even Trust in any thing, but Trust for Trust's sake; once accepted, once surrendered to, Realization begins to dawn.
The seed of Truth that was planted in the Heart begins to be Heard, Softly at first, like a distant lullaby, faintly recognizable yet mysterious. As one begins to listen to this Song of Truth, the world and all of its distractions begins to lose its luster.
At a certain point in this dawning of Realization, one’s external life may begin to change. Millionaires become recluse. Recluses begin business careers. Teachers leave school. Housewives become mountain climbers. Mountain climbers become housewives. Or nothing changes. But every thing has changed. One now Sees That which was unseen before the surrender.
Friends and acquaintances may speak of the change without knowing what is happening, unless they too have begun to Realize Truth; and they have, if they have no doubts about what is happening.
It is wonderful to watch the Seed of Truth grow into the Tree of Truth. It is wonderful to see a person begin to awaken to their True Being.
If you should begin to consider this of which we have spoken, if you can bear the pain of not knowing, you will find help all around you to assist in your Awakening.
No one can Awaken for you. No one can teach you how to Awaken, but many are beginning to learn how to point unerringly to the Truth they Know.
Namaste.
May all beings Awaken to the Self.
